Chapter 40

On the way to Sarah’s clinic, Jake’s phone buzzed with a call from the Las Vegas area code.

“This is Jake.”

“Jake, it’s Dmitry, in Vegas. Do you remember me?”

“Of course. How are you, Dmitry?”

“Well … the smokes haven’t killed me yet.”

“Switch to small cigars and quit inhaling.”

He snorted. “Sure. I’ll give it a try.”

“What can I do for you?”

“Someone tried to hire me to kill you. I thought you might want to know,” Dmitry said matter-of-factly.

“You’re a master of understatement,” Jake said.

“Maybe I should come to San Francisco and act as your bodyguard. I owe you a favor.”

“Who tried to hire you?”

“Somebody who wanted to plant a bomb in your boat slip.”

Jake’s eyebrows shot up. “Whoever it was, they went ahead and did it. Another boat pulled into my slip by mistake and got blown up.”

“I’m sorry to say it was Russians, but not any of my friends.”

“Some of them don’t like me?” Jake asked.

Dmitry laughed, and then coughed hard. “Associates of Pavel and Yuri are mad at you for ruining their heroin business.”

“That’s the way it goes.”

“Be careful, Jake,” Dmitry said.

“I will, my friend, and thanks for the warning.”

Dmitry ended the call.

Jake arrived at the clinic and parked a block away to leave a space open for Sarah’s clients. He and Cody got out and walked along the sidewalk.

As they approached the clinic’s front door, a Lexus slowed down and then pulled over in a loading zone. The window rolled down slowly and Jake stopped dead in his tracks. His former fiancée, Gwen, was staring back at him.

Jake was tempted to look away and keep on walking, but he stood there for a moment, trying to be polite. “Why are you here, Gwen? Let’s not reopen old wounds.”

She looked him up and down, and then stared at his face as if wrestling with what she wanted to say. “Jake … we need to talk.”

He shook his head. “Sorry, but the last time you said that, you threw a champagne bottle at my head.”

“I apologize. I was manic, and under the influence of alcohol and cocaine. I’m out of rehab, now, and doing much better.”

Jake hoped she wasn’t trying to get back together with him. That was never going to happen.

In the awkward silence that followed, Gwen’s car stereo played the song “Rehab,” and Amy Winehouse sang about how she refused to go.

Jake raised his eyebrows. “Really?”

“That’s just a coincidence.”

The song ended, and then began again.

“Got it on replay?” Jake asked.

Gwen scowled at him, punching a finger at the dashboard to stop the music.

“This stereo is a piece of junk.”

Jake felt an old familiar sting. She’d never appreciated him. “Nope, I bought that car for you, remember? Premium surround sound audio system. But you’re never satisfied; nothing is ever good enough for you,” he said, sadly.

Jake heard someone approaching from behind him and turned to see Sarah, wearing black yoga shorts, a white sports bra and white cross-training shoes.

He was surprised at how relieved he was to see her. “Hey. What’ve you been up to, yoga class?”

She shook her head.
